Syros

Syros is the commercial, legal and cultural centre of the Cyclades islands. Syros economy is not dependent on tourism as it has a prosperous textile and agricultural industry. Visitors come to the island for its unique charm and friendliness.

Ermoupolis named after Hermes, the god of commerce is the largest city in the Cyclades . In the 19th century, the city was a major port and shipbuilding industry. The city built around the bay is a lively and appealing town, with Neo- Classical mansions. The central square of Plateia Miaouli has bars and cafes on one side and on the opposite side stands the striking town hall. The square is the city meeting place, especially in the evening when the locals take their evening walk ( Volta ).

The Archaeological Museum is to the left of the town hall, and has on display many artefacts from around the region.

The Apollo Theatre is a copy of the La Scala opera house in Milan . This was the first opera house in Greece , and has some fine wall paintings of the composers Verdi and Mozart.

The Vaporia district of the town is were the affluent ship owners built their mansions, the church of Agios Nikolaos is unique with its blue and gold dome. In front of this church stands the world’s first statue of an Unknown Soldier. The church of Agios Georgios is also impressive with its baroque architecture. The medieval settlement of Ano Syros is quaint with its narrow lanes and whitewashed houses. The resorts of Kini, Galissis and Vari have good beaches, many more beaches that are decent are to found around the south and west coast.
