Lefkada

The fourth largest island in the Ionian island group, detached from mainland Greece by a small canal. This mountainous yet fruitful island has many olive groves and vineyards. The west coast is more rugged than the east coast, which in addition is a busy tourist area. There are magnificent coves and golden beaches on the island. The islanders, retain many of their age-old customs some of the older women still wear traditional costumes.

Lefkada Town

A peaceful town built at the end of a lagoon, it is pleasing to saunter in the narrow lanes, shopping and taking a break in of the cafes. Earthquakes that have damaged the town in the past and resulted in the distinctive houses, built of wood with the upper floors covered in sheet metal. The Archaeological museum has some very fine exhibits on display. The monastery of Moni Faneromenis, from the summit you get good views over the town and lagoon. Across the bridge that spans the canal is the Fortress of Agia Mavra, founded by the crusaders, the ruins today are from later periods.

Nydra, becoming a popular holiday resort, from here you can sail to the islets of Madouri, Skorpidi, Skorpios, and Sparti also Meganisi. The islet of Skorpios is the burial place of Aristotle Onassis and family, and is off limits to the tourist, as also is the islet of Madouri, which is private, here the famous Greek poet A. Valaoritis spent the last 10 years of his life.

Vasilki, this very pleasant village is popular the younger generation, due to its status as being one of the top wind surfing beaches in Europe . Boats will take you to some of the finest beaches on the west coast.

Agios Nikatis, perhaps one of the most appealing, and pictorial villages on the island. Nearby are some stunning golden beaches. Other outstanding beaches where one can sunbathe to their hearts content are, Perfkoulia, Kathisma, Egremni and the magnificent beach at Porto Katski. Along the way stop of at one of the many road side stalls where the locals sell olives, cheese and wine, combined with some fresh bread you can have a “al fresco” picnic with friends or the one you love.

Meganisi, this islet remains for the time being relativity peaceful, with its lush nature, with its three charming village it worth taking a day trip here.
