Ithaki

The island home of the legendary Odysseus, who after his wanderings, finally returned to his much-loved island. Due to the lack of many beaches, your normal package tourist rarely ventures on to the island. Ithaki is ideal for those looking for a relaxing holiday, small forests of pine trees, vineyards and olive groves dot the island.

Ithaki Town (Vathy), the town is situated around the bay of Molos . The middle of the town is relatively small with narrow lanes, a large square with shops and cafes. The small Archaeological museum and the Nautical and Folklore Museum are worth visiting. Three kilometres to the northwest is the Cave of the Nymphs, where according to legend Odysseus hid the treasures given to him by the Phaeacians after the Trojan War was over. North of the town is Moni Karathon, which offers an excellent view over the island from its bell tower.

Stavros, is a small village northwest of Vathy from here you can explore the surrounding country. Loizos Cave is where excavations have revealed shards of pottery, with inscriptions testifying the worshiping of the gods, Athena, Artemis and Hera. However, finds that are more interesting were unearthed, twelve tripods similar to those given to Odysseus by the Phaeacians.

Kioni, this village to the southeast of the capital, with lush vegetation, lovely harbour it is picture perfect. It is an ideal place to relax and take a drink and a meal in the taverna or bars.
