General facts about Greece

Greece is one of the most visited countries in the world, due to its climate and rich heritage. Sad to say but Greece is no longer a cheap holiday destination, though many backpackers can enjoy the country on a limited budget. Greece is even so, a lot cheaper than most countries around the world. Greece , officially known as The Hellenic Republic, is the southernmost country on the European mainland. Covering an area of 131.940 square kilometres, with over 2,000 islands scattered throughout the eastern Mediterranean . Greece borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). Greece consists of ten administrative regions of which Macedonia is the largest with an area of 34,177 sq. km. The highest mountain in Greece with a height of 2,917m is Mount Olympus; the largest river in Greece is the Aliakmon River, with a length of 297 km. Fifty-four “Prefectures” divided the regions; the religious community on Mt.Athos is a self-governing territory. Prefectures consist of local councils or communities of which there are 1033 in total.
